Syria War - Heavy Combat During Intense Clashes Near Damascus | Syrian Civil War 2014. Syrian rebels in heavy combat during intense clashes with Syrian Army in Darayya, Damascus, Syria. This video shows intense close house to house fighting. The fighters operating in this operation where mainly members of Ajnad al-Sham and the Shuhada al-Islam Brigade.
Shuhada al-Islam is the largest FSA-banner group that is involved in the battle for Darayya, with most of its fighters being from the local area. It is the only rebel group that is completely under the authority of a local civilian council and operates with its approval.
Ajnad al-Sham is a an alliance of some more radical groups. The groups involved are: the al-Habib al-Mustafa Brigades, the Amjad al-Islam Gathering, the Sahaba Brigades and Battalions, the Shabab al-Houda Battalions and the Der al-Asima Brigade. The organization expressed support for the Geneva II talks and has an estimated strenght of about 15,000 fighters.
Darayya is a suburb of Damascus and one of the oldest cities in Syria. The city had a population of 78,763 as of 2004, making it the 19th largest city per geographical entity in Syria but now most of the residents fled as soon as the battle started.
In the beginning of the uprising, Darayya was mostly known for its large, peaceful demonstrations against Assad regime but has seen heavy fighting during the progress of the Syrian Civil War. The city was an early hotspot for anti-regime protests and subsequent regime oppression. Due to the fighting the city has been cut off, its electricity cut and has witnessed a continuous shelling. After Rebel forces already took the city in 2012 the area was re-captured twice by the Syrian army and other pro-regime forces and know sees heavy clashes with most of the municipality controlled by the armed opposition forces.
Fighting, Firefights and Clashes are still ongoing but rebels claim to have the upper hand attempting to create a stronghold near Damascus center.
